THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES.....MAY 2019

REMEMBERING ROGER...

Recently, my dear friend Roger Miller passed away.  I had the wonderful privilege to spend time with Roger while he was in the hospital.

Roger was a great friend and brother in the Lord.  He shared his many, God-given talents with me and Air Mobile.

Among those gifts, Roger had the ability to "tell a story" with images and words.  Roger's long and successful career as the Director for NBC in Chicago pays tribute his gifts.

But, when Roger, at 80 years old crawled into the tiny co-pilot seat of the Little Donkey and flew to Haiti after the terrible earthquake, Roger gave more than a few tips.  He literally put his life on the line and made an amazing "Mini-Documentary" titled "Air Mobile Joe".

Here's the award winning mini-documentary "Air Mobile Joe" - "AIR MOBILE JOE" by ROGER MILLER

Today, we will honor Roger at the Great Outdoors Church here in Titusville, FL.  I will surely miss my dear friend and fellow trooper in the cause of bringing clean water and the Good News of Jesus to the hurting and thirsty around the world.

Please remember to pray for his dear wife, Adelle as she deals with the loss of her beloved Roger.

I drove 13 hours yesterday to get here in time for the service. Today, Cindy and Ari & "Company" will be on the road heading back to Florida.  As always, THANK YOU for your invaluable prayer, love and support!!

REMEMBER....

Today, in America, we honor our fallen soldiers and remember the sacrifices (so many) made to secure our freedom.  Many of you reading this blog, have lost loved ones and friends.

I know there are many "Memorial Day" Sales, but please take a moment and reflect and remember those who gave their all.

We remember so many, but for my Cindy, she lost her little brother, Thomas S. Perron USMC at the age of 19 in the terrible Beruit bombing (10-23-83).

I'm THANKFUL for our great nation and say, with all of my heart, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

Yesterday, at church, I was given the opportunity to deliver the message.

I had about a 7 minute warning and thankfully, our Lord gave me a simple message on hearing His Word.

The Word tells us to be "Instant in season & out of season".  Praise God for His Amazing Grace.

A bit later on, while at a cabin inspecting the crawl space we found this, or should I say..."these".

You never know what you'll find crawling under the house.

At any rate, black snakes kill rodents and other bad snakes.  So, we just let them be.

Today, I'll be hitting the road for Florida, as I've been asked to speak at the Memorial for my dear friend and brother, Roger Miller.

Cindy and Ari & "Company" (Andy, Honey, Pippin & Maple), will be heading back to Florida shortly thereafter.

So, on this MEMORIAL DAY, may we REMEMBER those who gave their all for our FREEDOM!

THANK YOU, as always, for your precious prayer, love and support!!!

Just enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning here in the mountains of East Tennessee.  We're on our way to church.

Today, we'll simply enjoy the view and the peace, counting our many blessings and being together.

GOD IS GOOD!!

May you be blessed today and we're so appreciative for your faithful prayer, love and support!!

CINDY, ARI & "COMPANY" ARRIVE SAFE

THANK YOU for your prayer for safe travels.  I'm pleased to say that Cindy & Ari & "Company" (Andy, Pippin, Maple &....a new member, Honey) arrived late yesterday evening.

Here's how "Honey" happened.

Along the way, while in a massive traffic jam, somewhere in South Carolina, Cindy and Ari searched on-line and found this precious little one.

They detoured out of the traffic jam and bought her.  She's a Yorkshire - Terrier (Yorkie).  Oh, she's so cute!

BTW, Cindy and Ari had been searching for a little "Yorkie" for some time.  So, when they found "Honey", they knew she was the one for us.

We're looking forward to a good time at the cabin.

THANK YOU, again for your prayer, love and support!!

HERE COMES CINDY, ARI, ANDY, PIPPIN & MAPLE

Early this morning, Cindy & "Company" hit the road for the mountains of East Tennessee.

Ari and little Andy are coming.  Andy loves the cabin.  He's free to roam and run like crazy.

Ari's writing her second book, "Mansions & Mayhem".

While at the cabin, she's a genuine "mountain girl" and can find plenty of inspiring things to add to her next book.

BTW, her first book, "Parasols & Peril" is available on Amazon.  It's a great book with a wonderful ending.

Here's the link:  PARASOLS & PERIL BY ARIANA HURSTON (ADVENTURES IN GRACE)

Along with the "Company", is Pippin & Maple, our wild little "Sugar Gliders".

You may recall, the last time Pippin & Maple came to cabin, they got loose in the car and Cindy had her hands full negotiating the mountain road and pulling over to "capture" the little critters.

Last night, Cindy attended the Graduation Ceremony for our dear friend, Ari Black.

Cindy and Ari became very close, as Cindy has been Ari's Mentor for several years.

And, even after Graduation, Cindy will still be her mentor and "Big Sister".

CONGRATULATIONS ARI, you did it with flying colors!!  We're all very proud of you.

So, as I type, Cindy & Company are enroute to the Cabin & I can hardly wait!!

Please pray they have a safe and pleasant journey here.

And, as always, THANK YOU for your invaluable and truly appreciated prayer, love and support!!!

EARS....AVAILABLE

Thanks to the wonder of technology (YouVersion), I'm able to "hear" the Word of God throughout the day.

Since I do have 2 ears, I've made them both "available" to hear God's Word even as I go about working on projects at the cabin.

Am especially enjoying the Book of Revelation.  Love the verse that promises to bless us by "hearing" the Prophesy.

It seems the more I "hear" the Book of Revelation, the more I realize that our Lord is coming back to this earth "sooner than later".

THANK YOU, JESUS!

And, it's time to get that hay baled...before the rain comes.  I'm reminded of the wise words from my dear Cajun Momma. She used to tell me..."Baby, you gotta Make hay while the sun shines".

It's time to get on with this beautiful day.  I'm "listening" to His Word....and enjoying it.  May you be blessed today.  Hope you have a chance to "Hear" the Word.

And, I'm especially THANKFUL to you for your faithful prayer, love and support!!

CLEARED TO FLY A C-172 OUT OF MORRISTOWN

My good friends at RAM (Remote Area Medical) urged me to go to Morristown Airport and meet JB.

JB runs a first class Flight School and A&P (Aircraft & Powerplant) School at this pretty airport, nestled in the Smokey Mountains of East Tennessee.

JB is a legend and knows Aviation!  So glad to spend some time with him.  One thing became abundantly clear after only a few minutes...WE BOTH LOVE AVIATION!!

Earlier, I got checked out to fly one of JB's Cessna 172's.  This usually involves a flight where a CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) takes the pilot through a number of maneuvers.

My CFI was Manami.  Her father flies for FedEx and she will likely fly for them also.  She is a good pilot.  At the end of our "check-out" flight, she cleared me to fly any of the flight schools 172. Yea!

While we're in Tennessee, we'll be recruiting student pilots and especially, those interested in Mission Aviation.  Yes, I love my job!!

BTW, I've been working on "hearing ears & seeing eyes" to stay on course.  It works.  PRAISE GOD!  Just scroll down a couple of days to see what I'm talking about.

I'm looking forward to Cindy and Ariana and little Andy arriving here on Friday.

As always, THANK YOU for your invaluable prayer, love and support!!

MAKE HAY...WHILE THE SUN SHINES

Looks like we're going to get a good yield on our hay.  Have had good rain.  Our little hay field was mowed yesterday.  Next we'll cure, rake and then bale.  Love the process.

There's, of course, good lessons to be learned here.  My dear Momma used to tell me..."Baby, you gotta make hay while the sun shines".

In other words, seize the opportunities that are set before us.  Timing is very important.

As I shared yesterday, may we have "hearing ears and seeing eyes".

As we go through this day, may we be sensitive to the opportunities he places before us.  It may be to tell someone about Jesus, or give a homeless person some food, or visit someone in the hospital.

Our Lord sets opportunities before us every day.  My prayer is that I don't miss them.

May our Lord lead us each step of the way.  So, on this beautiful day, may His will be done in our lives!

And, THANK YOU for meandering down this road of life with me.  I truly appreciate your prayer, love and support!!!

HEARING EAR...SEEING EYE

Was reading Proverbs 20 early this morning, and came across verse 12.  It fits exactly what I want to do today...

In this life, there are so many directions we can go.  I've found that when I "Hear" His Voice (through the Word) and "See" as He sees, the day goes better.

It is comforting to know that HE HAS MADE THEM BOTH.

As I follow His direction by hearing Him and seeing the path He has set before me, I can then walk in His will for my life....today.

In other words, I can stay on course and simply do what He wants me to do.

I must admit, there are days that I get up and don't specifically seek to "Hear" Him and "See" as He sees.  I just plunge into the day and take things as they come.

So, on this beautiful day that our Lord has made, I'll rejoice and be glad in it.  Dear Lord, please give me "hearing ears & seeing eyes"!

May you be blessed today.  Seek to hear Him and see as He sees and your day will go better.

And, as I say every single day and mean with all of my heart, THANK YOU for your precious prayer, love and support!!!

A PEACEFUL SUNDAY MORNING....

At times, the quiet, sweet peace can be overwhelming.  Just sitting here in the Retreat Cabin, on this lovely Sunday morning, enjoying a cup of coffee, hearing the birds sing and seeing a little bunny skip away.

Oh, the Lord is so good!  Will be heading to church shortly. I never take the gift of our freedom for granted.  Many, around the world, do not have the freedom to worship.

In a few days, Cindy, Ari and little Andy will be coming up to the cabin to join me. I can hardly wait!

In the meantime, I'm working on a number of projects, including writing "Storm Dancer" and studying for my CFI oral exam.

Will be visiting some of the local airports, discussing flight training and "recruiting" prospective missionary pilots.

I PRAY you are blessed today.  And, I'm especially THANKFUL for you and truly appreciate your invaluable prayer, love and support!!!

RECRUITING MISSIONARY PILOTS....

Have been visiting local airports in our "neck of the woods".  New Tazewell Municipal (3A2), Rogersville Municipal (RVN) and Morristown Regional Airport (KMOR).

I've spent most of my life as a Missionary Pilot.  One thing I want to do is encourage others into this amazing and rewarding life.  Flying for the Lord is AWESOME!

However, there is a growing GLOBAL SHORTAGE of pilots affecting every aspect of Aviation (Private / Commercial / Military & Missionary).

I'm THANKFUL to be getting my Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) rating.

My hope and prayer is that I can be an instrument in our Lord's hands to "recruit" prospective pilots to be Missionary pilots.  BTW, I love talking to other pilots and visiting new airports!

THANK YOU for praying for Cindy on her road trip back to Florida.  She and little Andy arrived safely yesterday evening.

And THANK YOU, as always, for your faithful prayer, love and support!!

FAREWELL ROGER

I first met Roger Miller shortly after the terrible Haiti Earthquake in 2010.  Roger was a retired NBC Director and had a number of Emmy's to his credit.  He was gifted, funny and willing to "Run to the Roar".

This was demonstrated when, shortly after we met, he, at 80 years old, crawled in Ti Burik and flew 5+ hours to Haiti in an unpressurized plane at 19,000' right through the middle of the infamous "Bermuda Triangle".  Roger was a real trooper!!

BTW, we did have supplemental Oxygen on-board the little airplane.

We spent 5 days together in Haiti, in the midst of the post earthquake chaos, and he shot enough footage to create the Award Winning Mini-Documentary, titled "Air Mobile Joe".

*Note:  In the PS - I'll share the link to "Air Mobile Joe".  Take a few minutes and see the gift that our Lord gave to Roger to 'CAPTURE & TELL' a story!

Roger went on to be with the Lord yesterday.  I'm going to miss my dear friend and trooper.  I had the wonderful privilege to spend hours and hours with him in the hospital recently.

He told me story after story of his upbringing in a small South Dakota farm town during the depression.

Again, his wit and sharp memory painted wonderful pictures of a bygone day and a young man who wanted to get out and "see the world".

I wanted to be sure that Roger had made his peace with Jesus.  After sharing the "Roman Road of Salvation", Roger thoughtfully said..."Coon Plucker" and he gave a serene smile.

He went on to tell me how his sister, Marcea and he would bring Gospel Tracts to old Coon and tell him about Jesus.  He and Marcea wanted to see Coon SAVED.  I suppose that was Roger's way of telling me that He knew Jesus.

Again, FAREWELL ROGER.  THANK YOU for sharing your heart, talent, sense of humor, wit and so much more with me and so many others.  May you Rest In Peace in the arms of Jesus.  Jesus will use your wonderful talents and heart in Heaven and beyond.

And...today, my sweet Cindy drives back to Florida.  She has to work at the Hospital tomorrow.

It's been WONDERFUL having my Honey and little Andy with me here at the cabin.

Cindy, Ari and Andy will be back up here at the cabin in a week.  I can hardly wait.

Bye bye Cindy, Bon Voyage!

Meanwhile, back at the "Cabin", I'll be working on a number of projects, including meeting with Remote Area Medical.  We're working on a number of relief flights and beyond.

And, GOOD NEWS, from Don George, the rebuild of the rear engine on the Little Donkey (AKA:  Ti Burik) is progressing along nicely.  Soon, we'll have that great little airplane back in the air.

Time to get to work.  As always, THANK YOU for your invaluable prayer, love and support.  PLEASE remember to PRAY for Cindy as she makes the 12 hour drive back to Florida.  God bless!!

SWEET TIME IN THE MOUNTAINS....

Can't begin to tell you what a joy it is to have Cindy (and little Andy) at the cabin.  Cindy's work schedule at the hospital allows short trips up here and I'm so THANKFUL!

Was up before the sunrise listening to the Book of Philippians on YouVersion.  Coffee and my sweetheart, ahhh, it doesn't get much better.

BTW, the flowers were grown right here at the cabin.

Cindy will be heading back to Florida tomorrow.  I'll continue up here writing (on Storm Dancer) and developing some plans of ministry that are very exciting.  Will tell more later.

Time to head into this beautiful day that our Lord has made.  As always, THANK YOU for your precious prayer, love and support!!

CHAPTER 2..."NEGOTIATING WITH THE THUGS"....

I couldn't leave you hanging.  So, here is Chapter 2.

Storm Dancer

CHAPTER 2 – NEGOTIATING WITH THE “THUGS”

The phone rang around 5 times and he answered.  Must have been the “Chief Thug”, the one with the Chrome 45.  I quickly said, “Hey, we’re the Blancs (Whites) you just attacked on road to Mirabalais and we want our stuff back”.  His response in slurred Creole:  “ You want your stuff, it’ll cost you $30,000 U.S. Cash”.  The phone was on speaker and Barb put her thumb down.  My response:  “Ou fou” (you’re crazy) and I hung up.  Quickly checked my watch….( the Thugs missed stealing my watch during the ambush).

I looked at Barb who had a slight smile as she sipped her Coke and said, “5 minutes – 10 at the most”.  We sat quietly waiting.  I was beginning to hurt all over from the repeated blows.  Around 7 minutes later the phone rang.

The Chief Thug said, “Hey, we’ve already had offers of $4000.00 U.S. for each of the ‘things’ (he was referring to the Air Mobile Rescuers).  We knew he was lying.  Our response:  “Oh, really…sell them” and I hung up.  This was hard-nose negotiations.  If we let them know that we really wanted the stuff, the price would just go up and not down.

Just like clockwork, about 7 minutes later, the phone rang again.  The Chief Thug spoke quickly because he didn’t want me to hang up.  He asked, “OK, how much will you give me for the stuff? – I put the phone on mute and asked Barb how much we could “scrounge up”.  She said $500 maybe $700.

My response:  “$500.00 U.S.”  His response:  “$700.00”.   Barb smiled and  nodded “Yes”.  My response:  “OK”.  We agreed to a meeting place, at a certain “intersection” in 30 minutes (2 bumpy dirt roads that met at a certain close-by village).  It was only about 15 minutes away.  Johnny volunteered to go.  We prayed together and specifically for Johnny’s protection and off Johnny went in his old “rattle-trap” Toyota truck in a puff of smoke (the rings were gone and clutch was slipping).

While we were waiting, the news came that “Washington” had been found, abandoned on the side of the road, with the keys in it.  We quickly retrieved Washington.  Things were beginning to look up.

About 45 minutes later, Johnny was blowing the horn at the gate of the Village.  He dashed through the gate, which slammed shut as soon as his rear bumper cleared.  He assured us that he was not followed back to the Village.

Before going through our “Stuff”, we asked Johnny how the transfer went.  In the final instructions from the Chief Thug, our guy (Johnny) was to approach the intersection slowly and then stop and simply put his head down and hold out the $700.00.  Johnny did exactly as he was told.

Haitians are notorious for being late.  However, the “Thug” pick-up service was right on time.  Within seconds, Johnny felt the $700 ripped from his hand and then he began to hear pounding noises as item after item was thrown into the bed of his truck.  Then rapid slams on his door with barked instructions “Ale’ – Ale’ – Ale’ (Go –Go – Go).

Johnny gunned the old worn out engine, and with big puff of black smoke, the rear wheels made a very weak attempt to “peel out” as the clutch slipped.  On his way back to the Village, he took several off-routes on dusty roads.  In that way, he could easily see if he was “tailed”. Once assured that he was definitely not followed, he cautiously proceeded back to the Village.

Barb instantly knew that the back-pack was not among returned stuff that we “bought” back from the Thugs.  That was a huge blow both to her and to the 2 children that would likely spend another year in Haiti awaiting the re-creation of the documents.  What a terrible thing to do to those innocent children and the expectant adoptive parents.  Hearts were broken that day.

There were, however, 7 Air Mobile Rescuers, still in their nice black cases (though a bit scuffed up, from the quick transfer and the wild ride back to the Village), along with a another little bag.

No suitcase, cameras, computers, cash…all gone.  But…there was that one little vinyl bag.  To my absolute joy, it had my small black Bible and a beautiful picture of my Cindy.  One of the Thugs must have had a heart. Or maybe he remembered my calling on the Name of Jesus.  Or maybe there was some other reason he returned that Bible and picture of my Cindy.

Now, it had been several hours since the brutal attack and I was really beginning to hurt.  I had been struck repeatedly and kicked.  Also, my shoulder had been injured as they kept trying to “jerk” me out of the truck.  The seat belt did a good job of keeping me in place.

All of the residents of Barb’s Village wanted to hear the whole story.  I was elected the “Spokesman for the Victims”.  All of the images were crystal clear in my head so I proceeded to tell the story, even singing the little Ditty, “Nou ale’ Mirabalais” and Mirlande and Johnny joined in.

As I approached telling the dramatic end, I wasn’t sure if this was the way that Johnny and Mirlande saw things, so all I could do was to tell the story from my point of view.  Everyone in the Village acknowledged that surely, God had delivered us.  But, I wanted to know more.

So, after my dramatic “story-telling”, Barb and I, along with Johnny and Mirlande began piecing together just what had happened from each of our vantage points.  Our stories and memories coincided remarkably well.

The mystery that remained was, what “scared” those heavily armed Thugs off?  They had absolutely no reason, in the natural, to be afraid of us.  Barb is in her mid-sixties (though she’s tough as nails) and I’m just absolutely average with an emerging pot-belly and beginning to bald.  Not very impressive opponents. What would scare them away?

As we got down to the final moments, of our recollection, of the assault, we began working very hard to re-create in our mind exactly what was going on with the Thugs.  We all agreed that absolutely no vehicles were approaching.  We would have known instantly if that would have been the case, because we were right in the middle of the road.  No cars or trucks.

None of the local Villagers posed any threat whatsoever.  The Thugs were all well-armed and fierce.  No, the Villagers would have nothing to do with them.  Besides, these guys looked like they had Military Training.

And furthermore, with their wild and berserk actions, I suspect they were high on meth.

We all recalled that they kind of looked away from us and then got these weird expressions, like fear.  What did they see or hear?

Our only conclusion:  These Thugs saw something big and scary.  We recalled the story of Elisha and his servant.  They were surrounded by a huge Syrian Army who had come for Elisha, an accused “Spy”.  When his servant rushed into to Elisha’s home and told him about the huge Army who had come for him, Elisha remained calm (unlike me) and asked the Lord to open his servant’s eyes…

2 Kings 6:17

New International Version (NIV)
17 And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

We all figured that something like that must have happened.  We knew that we did not scare them off.  I had been, vigorously calling on the Name of Jesus to save us. Why wouldn’t our Lord send those warring Angels to scare those Thugs off?

Back to Elisha and his servant, when he prayed for the servant’s eyes to be opened, he also said, “those that be with us, are more than those that be with them”.  May we always remember that.
At the time of the attack, the only thing that I could think of was “Jesus, save us”.  I kept calling on His name and at the same time, telling the Thugs not to do this and that “ou pa vle fe sa” “YOU DON’T WANT TO DO THIS”.  Our Lord came through again.  There is such awesome power in His Name!

Philippians 2:10-11 New King James Version (NKJV)

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Now, just a bit more about those Thugs.  They were a well-known “Gang” that often did “Highway Robberies” in that region.  About a week after our ambush, the same gang attacked a Missionary Compound.  One of the Thugs shot several missionaries and was standing point blank in front another missionary and pulled the trigger.  His gun misfired.  The gun was described as a Chrome Colt 1911- 45.

Several days after that attack, the Gang was attacked by a large Police force and the leader was shot and killed.  He carried a Chrome Colt 1911 - 45.  I so vividly recall my very weak prayer, underneath that “holy plywood” and those palm fronds.  I prayed  for our Lord to get them….and yes, to save them.   Didn’t look like the Chief Thug accepted Jesus as His Savior….though, I certainly pray he did.

At times,  it is very difficult to pray for our enemies, still our Lord tells us to do just that.  There were, and continue to be, so many lessons along the road of this life.  Jesus promised to never leave us or forsake us, even unto the end.  My prayer, in looking back on that painful ambush, is that I truly can forgive my enemies, but there are certainly times when we need His help to do so.

End of Chapter 2 – 1687 Words

So, today, will continue working on "Storm Dancer" and....Cindy is on the road heading to the Cabin.  She'll be up here for a few days and I can hardly wait for her to arrive.  Please pray she has a safe journey.

And, THANK YOU for your invaluable prayer, love and support!!

"STORM DANCER"...

After 6 years of sitting in a file, "Storm Dancer" is coming out.  Been taking the time to edit what has been written and going on to continue the journey to completion.

Here's the opening Chapter..."A Song & an Ambush".  Hope you enjoy it.  There's more to come.

BTW, "Storm Dancer" is NOT fiction.  These events actually happened & by God's Amazing Grace, I'm writing this blog today.

Storm Dancer

CHAPTER 1 – A SONG AND AN AMBUSH

Something was wrong.  Port-Au-Prince International Airport was way too quiet.  Normally, it’s a bee-hive of confusion and bedlam with guys in grey pants and red caps grabbing at your bags and people yelling at you.  It was deserted, tense, strange.  What was going on?

By the next morning, “all Hell had broken loose”.  The recent election was being questioned.  The clear winner, Preval had garnered 62% of the vote.  The other 5 Candidates shared the 38%.  A recent “quick” recount had Preval at 48.7% just under the 50% threshold which would prevent a run-off.  The people would have none of it and they took to the streets like an angry tidal wave.

Every main and secondary thoroughfare was blocked.  Tires were burning, old car carcasses were doused with gasoline and lit, the sky was black and ominous.  The air was filled with heavy gunfire and devilish screaming.

Air Mobile was on a “Mission”.  We had life-saving water purifiers to deliver.  Our next locations were through the middle of the “war-zone”.  We knew it would be difficult, but we’d try anyhow.  Barbara (AKA) Rambo in the Blue Dress, had some “street info” that gave a possible routing through the worst parts of the street violence.

The anger and violence was rapidly increasing.  We had managed to “dance” and spin and squeeze through 6 harrowing road-blocks.  The 7th  road-block was a “show-stopper”.  There was one guy that was completely insane.  His eyes were blood red and and teeth were snarling and I thought I saw some foam coming out the side of his mouth.  He truly wanted to kill us.

OK, time to re-group.  We retreated from the crazy guy and worked back through the other 6 road-blocks.  It was much easier to go away from town instead of into town.  Soon, we were back at the “mission”.  Our plan:  Go to Mirabalais, a nice provincial town in the Central Plateau.  We had information from the Missionaries there, that things were peaceful and quiet.  It was a beautiful day for a ride in the “country”.

I was driving Barb’s Toyota Crew Cab.  We had affectionately named it “Washington” because of the number of rivers we’d crossed.  Washington could “swim”.  Mirlande and Johnny were in the back seat.  I had struck up a little “ditty song” that went like:  Nou Ale Mirabalias (Nu A-lay Mira-balay).  It was a catchy tune.  Soon Johnny and Mirlande joined me and we were just “dancing in our seats”.

So glad to be heading out of town and from the violence and fire and the gunshots.  The Haitian people were mad, real mad.  Best to pick and choose one’s battles. The road was clear and we were on our way….or so I thought.

I like to wear a vest.  You know, one of those “Safari” or Photographer or Fisherman’s Vest.  Pockets everywhere.  Suddenly, I had the strangest impression to take my wallet out of my pants pocket (the pants have a bunch of pockets also) and slip it into a back pocket on the vest.  It’s a unique pocket, because it’s pretty much hidden.

I never missed a lick, just kept driving and singing and unzipping and slipping that wallet into that clandestine back pocket and zipping it up.

We had gotten up to about 80 KPH, about 50 MPH, the road was clear and smooth (a true rarity in Haiti, which is known for its’ horrendous roads).  Life was good.  We’d get to Mirabalais by lunch time. The Missionaries had promised to feed us.  I was hungry.

The white Toyota Crew-Cab that was coming at us, began to swerve erratically.  What was wrong?  Had the steering gone out, had he blown a tire. What was happening?  I slowed and watched and planned my next “dodge” move, Barb began screaming…”don’t stop, don’t stop”. For just a second, I hesitated, when suddenly, he accelerated, came right at me and then jerked to a stop at a 45 degree angle.  I was “jammed”.

Then it was like a blur, men instantly jumped out of the back of the truck, the doors flew open and within a second or two, we were surrounded.  Every one of the thugs had guns, big guns.  Our doors were ripped open, Johnny and Mirlande were torn out of their seat.  Barb, with fist flying, pushed her way out.  She knew very well that it was an ambush.

I still had my seat-belt on, and one of the “goons” was trying to rip me out of the seat.  Again, I hesitated.  Pushing through the split second of denial, I knew we were under big attack.  I just didn’t want to give them the truck. I knew they were going to steal it. Barb had worked way too hard to get this truck.  But was it worth my life?

There was tremendous confusion, yelling, ripping, hitting, then I heard Barb yell, “Joe, get out of the truck…they’ll kill you if you don’t!”.

I looked toward her voice and there, about 8 inches from my right temple, was a wicked Chrome Colt 1911 45.  I was looking right down the barrel.  The hole was huge!

Everything was moving in slow-motion.  I could see every detail of the 45, it even had a few scratches that I could identify to this day.  The image of that 45 is burned into my brain.

The crazed gunman was screaming with demonic shrieks and “stabbing” his gun toward my temple.  He was yelling in broken English…”Give me my money, give me my money!”

Suddenly, there was a hard jerk on my left shoulder.  I turned and there was an old Smith & Wesson, long-nose 38, inches from my left temple.  I noticed, clearly, that the 38 hole was not nearly as large as the 45.

Suddenly, there was movement near the left rear view mirror and a long barrel pushed through, not sure, but I think it was an M-1 Carbine.  It was old and worn out and I caught a “flash” of the wooden stock.  It was pointed inches from my heart.  Wow, looking down 3 barrels at once.  Guess I’d better get out of the truck.

I unsnapped the seat belt and the guy holding the 38 jerked me right out and within seconds was rifling through my pockets.  He emptied them all.  Then he went to the vest and began ripping pockets open, I could hear the Velcro screaming.  I was completely over-powered and helpless.  Another “Thug” jumped in “Washington” and tore out of there, almost hitting me and thug with the 38.

Then, the 38 Thug and I made momentary eye-contact. I could see that he was fascinated by all the pockets and he felt my wallet in the disguised back pocket.  He desperately wanted to get his hands on whatever I had “stashed” back there.  Then, like an epiphany, he must have thought, Hey, I’ll just remove the whole vest and can dig out that treasure at my leisure.  I knew what he was thinking….

So, he went to work ripping and tearing the vest off of my left shoulder.  I wasn’t being very helpful.  I held  my arm straight down and tight against my hip.  That wallet had my drivers license, my pilots license, my flight physical certificate and a couple of credit cards.  Now, I didn’t want to die for that wallet, I just wasn’t going to be helpful.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he managed to get the left arm out the vest  and went to work on my right arm.  Same routine, arm straight down, pulling, turning, twisting away.  He was too focused on getting the vest to “Punish” my delaying tactics.  Then….I had an idea.

In a flash, I shot my left arm back into the vest.  After agonizing seconds, the right arm was extracted from the vest and just when he thought he had a sure victory, there was confusion and anger.  He must have thought, “I knew I pulled his left arm out…”,

Oh well, he went right back to work on the left arm.  The treasure in the hidden back pocket was driving him crazy.  Then, for a very brief moment of comical insanity, I let out a little laugh and….slipped my right arm back into the vest.

After more agonizing moments of twisting and turning, the left arm was finally removed and again, Victory…. only to be crushed again by defeat.  He began to go to work again on my right arm when, it just became too much for him.  He hit me hard and then kicked me a couple of times out of pure frustration and anger and began pushing me toward the open door of the white Toyota Crew-Cab…with the vest still on me.

Now, we call Barb, “Rambo in Blue Dress”, for many reasons. Among them, she’s tough, real tough.  Barb has been in more attacks and gotten out of them, more than anyone we know. Barb is a “fierce’ fighter for kids, particularly those that are helpless (no shortage of those in Haiti).  If you get in Barb’s way when she’s going for a kid, she’ll hurt you badly to rescue the kid.  Cindy and I know this because of our Juliet & Ariana, both of whom Barb rescued.

Well, by the side of the white Toyota I saw Barb and one big guy.  Barb was hitting him so hard, even landing a couple of blows to his face.  He was getting mad.  I sensed, he was about ready to shoot her.

I yelled, “Hey Barb, we gotta PRAY - right now!”.  I lunged at her and grabbed both of her shoulders and pushed her down to her knees.  The back right door was open and we were about 4 feet away.  We both knew that if they put us in that truck we were dead.

I began to PRAY….it was more like a SCREAM.  I simply yelled “Non du Nom Jezi – PA FE SA” – Translated:  In the Name of Jesus don’t do this).  I was speaking directly to our captors.  I kept screaming it over and over.  Then I changed it to “Non du Nom Jezi OU PA VLE FE SA”! (In the Name of Jesus YOU DON’T WANT TO DO THIS).  I mean I was screaming at the top of my voice over and over again.

Don’t have an exact number of attackers.  It was between 12-14.  One had dashed away in the truck, leaving somewhere between 11-13 heavily armed gunmen.  Johnny and Mirlande were laying flat on the ground, not moving.

What happened next, to this day, still amazes me.  As I was screaming like a crazy man, suddenly, all of the attackers stopped dead in their tracks.  They looked away from me, I don’t know what they saw.  There were no vehicles anywhere.  They had attacked and apprehended two, past their prime, missionaries who were unarmed.  They had already taken a $30,000 truck, suitcases, cameras, computers, cash and bunch of other stuff.

All they had to do was push us into the back of that truck and hold us for ransom or God knows what else.  The ambush/attack was nearly over.  But something, very strange, was going on.

As they looked away, I could see fear in their faces.  I didn’t understand what was happening.  Suddenly, they all jumped in their truck, leaving us on our knees and me still screaming the Name of Jesus, and they tore out of there like something big and bad was chasing them.

They yelled to the small group of Villagers, who happened to be watching this attack unfold, “We’ll be back, we’ll be back for them”.

I stopped screaming and looked at Barb. She was mad and so was I.  The group of on-looking villagers ran to us and pulled us up and began pushing us toward an abandoned old hut.  There on the side of it was a pile of palm fronds.  They threw us down into the middle of the big leaves and then threw an old piece of plywood on top of us and then covered us with more palm fronds.  They said “don’t move and be quiet” in Creole.

There we were, attacked by a pack of “rabid dogs”, robbed and beaten..at least I was.  Barb did her share of beating them.  The piece of plywood had been a “form” for pouring cement and had a bunch of holes in it.  The noon light streamed through and I could see the anger on Barb’s face.

Then I said, “Barb, you know what we have to do, don’t you?”.  She nodded quietly, I said, we have to forgive the “B…tards”.  Yes, that’s exactly what I said.  I had a partial message from Jesus.  I knew we had to forgive them, but, oh, was I mad.  I guess our Lord just kind of rolled His eyes and smiled at my attempt to pray a prayer for our attackers.

I prayed, “OK, Lord I forgive them, but please GET THEM”!  I wasn’t sure what I wanted our Lord to do to them.  Maybe it was my way of saying “Save them…after you beat them up a bit”.

Then, we heard a vehicle coming by, it was the White Toyota, I recognized that classic Diesel engine and then I heard them yell to the Villagers, “Where are they, where are they”?  The Villagers said someone took us away.  Well, I guess that was kind of the truth, as the villagers had taken us out of the middle of the road and hid us away.  There were a few more exchanges and then we heard the truck roar off.

About 5 minutes later, the Villagers came and uncovered us and put us on 2 of the local motorcycles (Honda 50 Cubs held together with baling wire) and the drivers sped us (as fast as the little Cub could go) away through little trails and paths between mud huts and through sugar cane fields.  We never went on the main road.  We just bounced along and finally, ended up close to our Mission Base.

We staggered into the Village and the whole Community surrounded us.  They knew something bad had happened to us.  Barb said, I want a Coke (Barb loves Coca-Cola).  I joined her and we finally spoke.  About 10 minutes later, Johnny & Mirlande showed up.

Oh, we were still mad, but very, very glad to be alive!  We dodged a bullet, actually a bunch of bullets.

Among the things stolen, a back-pack with 2 completed Dossiers (Adoption Papers) for 2 kids to go to America to begin a life with loving American Parents.  That hurt Barb badly.  She had worked for 2 years on those Dossiers.  Of course, she also lost “Washington”, a dear friend!

I lost my suitcase and video camera, and regular camera and computer, cell phone and 7 Air Mobile Rescuers.  They had also found my emergency stash of cash that I carry in the event a Team Member needs urgent medical care.  That stash had been with me in over 10 countries and now, those Thugs had it.  That made me even more mad.

As we were sitting there, sipping our cokes, the idea came…not sure whose it was, Hey, they got our cell phones also.  That meant that we could call them.  Barb wanted that back-pack and I wanted those Rescuers.

I picked up the phone and dialed…...

A PROVERBS 31 WOMAN ON MOTHER'S DAY

I am a blessed man to have Cindy as my wife!

Cindy is, without a doubt, my Proverbs 31 Woman and I'm so THANKFUL to our Lord for bringing her into my life.

Never have I met a lady of God with such strength, integrity, joy, love and beauty.  Cindy loves Jesus with all of her heart!

I must tell you, that after working at a large hospital for less than 6 months, Cindy was named the "The Nurse of the Month".  Her deep love for our Lord Jesus flows to her patients.

I' m so proud of my Cindy!

Yesterday, while editing "Storm Dancer", I got to Chapter 8..."When Joe met Cindy".

We fell in love over a cup of coffee* and on a Haiti Mission.

Again, I'm so THANKFUL to our Lord for bringing Cindy, this amazing "Lady of God", into my life!

She's working at the Hospital today, but hopes to join me here at the cabin in a couple of days.  I can hardly wait!!

So, today being Mother's Day, may you honor your mother and wife today.

I'm extremely THANKFUL to have you on-board with me today with your faithful prayer, love and support!!

*PS - BTW, we both love coffee, which is a gift from God!

"STORM DANCER" COMES ALIVE

I'm pleased to say that "Storm Dancer" is certainly alive.  I'm so glad to have opened the file.  Been editing (edit - edit - edit) and bringing the book up to date.

I'm reminded of one of my favorite Scriptures - Revelation 12:11 "TESTIFY!"

Looking back, in the midst of great tragedy and suffering, the Hand of God is ever with us.

When reading my reports from the field, and telling the stories, my heart is encouraged to go further and do more and bring hope and life to the suffering.

My prayer is that "Storm Dancer" will challenge many to launch out and serve our Lord Jesus with courage and faith.

In so many of the stories, when it seemed hopeless and no where to go, our Lord has come through again and again and again.

Just the fact that I'm still alive to tell this story is a TESTIMONY of God's AMAZING GRACE!

May I encourage you to look at your life and remember the times that our Lord has come through for you?  You too, have stories to tell.

But for the Grace of God....you would not be reading this blog right now.  Go back and remember and tell someone your story today.

In so doing, you'll gain new strength and find power to overcome Satan, by the Blood of the Lamb and the Word of your Testimony!!

So, on this stormy, rainy day in Tennessee, I'll continue to write and edit and TESTIFY of the goodness and grace of our Lord Jesus!

May you be BLESSED today and as I say every single day and mean with all of my heart, THANK YOU for your invaluable prayer, love and support!!

AN OLD FILE....

Yesterday, I opened an old file...."Storm Dancer".  Six years ago, I came to the Retreat Cabin with the intention of writing "Storm Dancer".  I wrote 13 chapters and closed the file.

Don't know all the reasons, I suspect, just wasn't ready to "go there".

Yesterday, I re-read all 13 chapters and at times cried like a baby.  Oh, there were sad tears and glad tears and amazed tears.  Well, it may be time to 'finish the book'.

So, for the next few days, I'll be writing.  I must say that some of the memories are pretty gruesome and painful.  Disasters cause a lot grief and destruction.

But, as I see the Hand of God opening so many doors and experiencing so many miracles....yes, it's time to finish the book!

Cindy and I are exploring some opportunities up here.  She'll be joining me in a few days. In the meantime, I'll be writing.

Am also working on getting a much needed Air Mobile Rescuer water purifier into Uganda in an orphanage run by an amazing "Lady of God".  Even talking to Barbara Walker ("The Lady in the Blue Dress") about possibly delivering the unit.

Time to get out the pen and write.  As always, THANK YOU for your prayer, love and support!!

A SIX PACK & WITTY INVENTIONS

While pondering "Witty Inventions", my mind went to....how to bring more clean water where desperately needed.

In conversations with great "Water Mules", Rolf Engelhard, Joe Prussel and Yahn Gray, we've come up with a way to increase the output of the Air Mobile Rescuer(s) by 600%!

We call it a "Six Pack".  Often, while on Air Mobile clean water deployments following disasters, the question is asked...."Can you scale the unit up for more output?".

By combining the units together with a "quick connect / disconnect manifold", configurations can be made to fit the need.

BTW, Yahn is very good with 3-D drawings and was able to put together these configurations very quickly.

I love how our Lord has brought such capable people together to work on the problem of bringing clean water to desperate people.

I'm also reminded of the Words of our Lord Jesus...."I was thirsty and you gave me to drink..."

So, here at the cabin, while pondering in the field, our Lord gives "Witty Inventions" and ideas to bring His Love to a lost and dying world.

PRAISE GOD!!

I wonder what ideas our Lord will give today!  Folks, this is a noble mission and I'm so THANKFUL to have you on-board with us with your precious prayer, love and support!!

PONDERING...IN THE FIELD
Spent hours in the fields on my little, old White (lawn Tractor) defining where the hay would be cut.  It's going to be a good crop, have had a lot of rain.

While cutting the perimeter, away from my cell phone and computer, one can think and ponder Propitiation and seek His Wisdom.

Speaking of God's Wisdom, how about Proverbs 8!  I love verse 12, He gives "Witty Inventions"!

Our water purifier, is a "Witty Invention".  It's an amazing machine.

The Inventor of the Ozone / UV Module, Rolf Engelhard, is a dear friend and Christian.

Rolf gives God all the glory for showing him how to clean dirty water. Rolf says, "that others might live to receive the Gospel".

Back to Proverbs 8, we are urged to seek God's Wisdom.  It is better than silver and gold.  While "in the field" my heart cries out for more of His Wisdom.

I'd like to share Proverbs 8 with you today.  If you have a few minutes, just click on this link and enjoy God's Wisdom...PROVERBS 8 (KJV).

Time to get to work.  THANK YOU, as I say every single day and mean with all of my heart, for your precious and truly appreciated prayer, love and support!!

PONDERING PROPITIATION...

Propitiation is a word that is not commonly used in the English Language.  But...it is a GAME CHANGER!

propitiation

 noun
pro·pi·ti·a·tion | \ prō-ˌpi-shē-ˈā-shən  \

Definition of propitiation

1the act of propitiating

2something that propitiatesspecifically an atoning sacrifice

Simply put, Jesus paid the price for the sins of the world.

While here at the cabin, I often listen to the Word of God via YouVersion.

Lately, the word "Propitiation" keeps coming to me and I've been pondering it's meaning.

The deeper I drill, the more of God's love flows into my heart.

I recall speaking with a young man who was on his way to Seminary.  I asked him.  "What is your main goal"?  He simply said..."Understanding the true meaning of Propitiation".  Good answer.

Because of Propitiation, the door to heaven is opened, if we believe on Jesus and receive His forgiveness through His sacrifice on the cross.

May I encourage you to open your heart today and allow "Propitiation" to flow.  Jesus loves you!!

And today is "National Nurses Day".  I am so proud of my Cindy who is a full-time nurse.  She is working on a tough unit where folks are hurting.

She is flowing in her gift of compassion and great skill.  God bless you, Cindy!!

And to you who walk down this road of life with me, THANK YOU, as always, for your faithful prayer, love and support.

GOD BLESS AMERICA....ON I-26 & BEYOND

Drove from Florida to Tennessee on beautiful roads and torrential downpours.  Along the way, stopped at a Rest Area on I-26 and had a few thoughts.

Arrived at the "Retreat Cabin" around 1:00am (13 hours later).  Slipped and slid up to the cabin.  Been raining up here for days.

Will be in meetings this morning with our dear friends, Teresa and Richard Suarez.

Looking back on the journey from Florida to Tennessee, I'm extremely THANKFUL for the good roads and relative safety that we have in America.

Am reminded of those that are struggling around the world.  Particularly, those who are in Venezuela where literally millions are lacking simple food, water, medicine, etc.

We're asking our Lord what we can do to help those in such dire need.

It's time to head out to that meeting.  As always, THANK YOU for joining me on this journey through life.  THANK YOU for your invaluable prayer, love and support!!

"ESCAPE" TRANSFER....& GETTING WISDOM

Will be on the road to Tennessee today.  Have some cargo to deliver to the Tennessee Cabin and the trusty Ford Escape will be my ride.

This morning, while reading Proverbs 4, verse 7 stands out.  "WISDOM IS THE PRINCIPLE THING, THEREFORE, GET WISDOM!!"

In this life, there are so many ways that we can go.  My prayer is for our Lord to lead and guide each step of the way.

I'm THANKFUL that our Lord wants to give us HIS wisdom.  All we have to do is ASK!

I sure do love the pearls of wisdom given to us by Solomon in the Book of Proverbs.

As you probably know, I often turn to the day of the month, and go to the corresponding Proverb.  Today being May 4, Proverbs 4.

It's just a good way to good a daily dosage of His Wisdom.

Of course, the Bible is God's Word and is full of His Wisdom for us.

So, it's time to hit the road and head to the mountains of East Tennessee.

THANK YOU, as always, for your precious prayer, love and support!!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARI!!

Our sweet Ariana turned 14 yesterday.  Among her gifts was a lovely peach dress and Oh... did she love it!

And look at her.  All we could say is WOW.

Ari is an amazing daughter and a true gift from God to Cindy and me.

Ariana is among many things, a gifted author with a vivid imagination.

As you may know, Ari has recently published her first book(!) "Parasols & Peril".

Her birthday gifts included a "Parasol" to go with that lovely dress.

We are so proud of Ariana!!

Earlier yesterday, I spent several hours at the hospital with my dear friend, Roger Miller.

I am pleased to say that he is doing much better and we're giving God all the Glory!

THANK YOU for your prayers!!

The weather moved into our area more rapidly than was forecast, so Glen and I postponed our scheduled training flight.

We're continuing to monitor the volatile situation in Venezuela.  Many are hungry and in desperate need of clean water.  We're seeking ways that we can help.

As I say every single day and mean with all of my heart, THANK YOU for your precious prayer, love and support!!

WATCHING...& PRAYING FOR VENEZUELA!

As the protests rise and fall and bullets fly and people die, we PRAY for Venezuela!

This is an extremely important and volatile time in that country.

PLEASE join us in prayer for God's will to be done!!!

Here's more on this unfolding catastrophe...VENEZUELANS TAKE TO THE STREETS AS UPRISING ATTEMPT SPUTTERS

Meanwhile, Glen and I are going to attempt to squeeze in another flight before some wicked WX comes.

Here's a shot of a "future" projection weather coming by noon.  Gotta fly quick!

BTW, looks like "Hurricane Season" may be knocking on our door a bit earlier than usual.

So, on this upcoming "stormy" day in sunny Florida, heading to the airport to do a little more flight training, getting ready for that Check Ride.  Yea!!

I also would like to ask you to PRAY for my dear friend and brother, Roger Miller.

He's not in good shape and simply needs our prayers today.

You may recall that Roger produced an award winning Documentary titled "Air Mobile Joe".

Roger, at 80 years old, traveled to Haiti with me in the Little Donkey after the terrible Haiti earthquake and shot the documentary.

If you've never seen it, here's the link (Roger did an amazing job!!) - "AIR MOBILE JOE" BY ROGER MILLER

ENCORE....

Taking advantage of an opening in our schedules, Glen and I will be back in the air continuing the flight training toward that CFI (Certified Flight Instructor) rating .

Between "Polishing" commercial maneuvers and knowing where to find proper "Flight Endorsement" verbiage, etc. etc. out of thousands of pages of federal regulations....We're getting close to that CHECK RIDE!

I must admit, this has been an enjoyable journey, as I truly love flying.

I still can't get over the fact that our Lord lets me do it.

It's nice "having your cake and eating it too!!"

Time to head to the airport and fire up that sweet little Cessna 172 and fly.

Thank you, as always, for your precious prayer, love and support!!
